Simple Understanding of the Eight Auspicious Tibetan Symbols in Buddhism

The tantrik culture and Buddhism is prevalent in Tibet and China. Since ancient times the monks used to write scriptures on flags and tie it above the mountains or huts. They believed that the wind when blowing would take these symbols to many other places of the world and bring about peace and enlightenment everywhere. The five elements theory of balancing all the five elements when living,that is fire, wood, earth , water and metal , what we know today as the principles in feng shui existed even before we came to know about this. The basic principle behind this is living in harmony  with nature. peaceful existence with nature not harming any element in way for progress.
There are eight auspicious symbols of Tibetan Buddhism which were traditionally offered to teachers to transmit them to students and in healing rituals.Each symbol represents one of Buddha\'s teachings and when used all together their power is multiplied many folds. With these symbols appearing in most of my healing paintings along with Reiki symbols and Chinese Calligraphy I would like to give an simple explanation of these eight auspicious symbols.

1) Parasol- The Umbrella, symbolizes royalty and spiritual power, protection from negative energies.
2) Gold Fishes, represent fertility and good fortune.Two fishes help to swim through the ocean of life problems smoothly.
3) Treasure Vase, a vase of inexhaustible treasures, spiritual and material abundance,   satisfaction from all material desires.
4) Lotus, denotes mental and spiritual purity and peace. The growing of lotus in muddied water symbolizes the mind and soul growing from disturbances towards enlightenment.  
5)  Conch Shell represents the call for Buddha teachings, the symbol of enlightenment.
6) Endless knot having twined knots that are inter linked together also termed as  mystic knot as the beginning and end of the knot is not visible.
7) Victory Banner depicts victory of truth, peace and harmony over evil forces. Used to bring about victory in career, wealth and health and in fact all areas of life.
8) Wheel, representing the never ending cycle of life learning, its movement in circular direction, never ending indicates spiritual growth and learning of Buddha principles and bringing about spiritual change.
The eight lucky symbols often termed as Ashtamangala are the most powerful symbols used to bring about harmony, luck peace and enlightenment. The qualities of Buddha are represented by these eight auspicious symbols.
In some places the eight auspicious symbols are also depicted as symbol bearing Goddesses holding each symbol termed as Tashi-Lhamo Gyal in Tibet an culture, The Ashtamangala Devi in sanskrit. Each Goddess is seen holding a symbol and is decked with jewels and ornaments.
My latest painting has a form of green figure, is I think the Green Tara a Goddess in female form which I will write about later on.

 This painting is an experience a feeling which came about using different strokes along with colours of freedom. I began with selecting the colours of the tricolour flag of India and then let the colours flow and the rest is history, I have this wonderful attractive abstract painting.

This is an abstract painting done using acrylics on oil sketch paper. My many efforts of using acrylics have still not succeeded and I still have to learn the correct method of painting using acrylic colours. they dry very fast and also have effects similar to water colours. But the advantage with acrylics is that they are water proof so once the painting is dry you need not worry of spilling liquid on it and the painting getting spoiled, like with water colours.

This painting is done in July , 2011 and done for enjoyment. My signature style shapes , my favorites circles and squares!The triangle was done to create a three dimensional effect but I do not know whether I have achieved this aim, which gives me another inspiration of a new artwork.  Glaze with green over blue colour and the hot pink.(somewhere ended up with muddy colours which I have erased using water immediately, the fun part of abstracts!)on the whole I enjoyed this artwork very much as I was free to make anything.

After this artwork I have done few paintings trying some shapes in three dimensional effects. each painting leads to another...so much to paint..so little time

This is another artwork that has been included in the Emirates competition. The choice of colours matter most to me and very often i end up using french ultramarine blue and Prussian blue, titanium white, turquoise blue, all colour that are linked to peace. I being an spiritual healing artist have more tendency to select these colours and very often I have to choose and force myself to use reds and greens!

This si an abstract painting and my signature style, lines are used to depict so many aspects in the artwork. This painting is open to interpretation by the viewers.

I have read that any abstract painting must be right from all sides.

This painting has fulfilled my expectations and since I got the concept clear it is most apt for the title given.

Art competitions are most important as they give you motivation to excel and also give you global exposure.Winning for me is not so important as I believe that we are all on a journey in this world.

This painting is an abstract artwork which has symbolic meaning indicated with the choice of colours. And my signature style, I cannot let go of colours any time and so have selected many colours for the indication of various cultures.

This painting can be hung on any wall but will be more suitable for any office or home. It is sure to be a welcome piece for any living room and center of attention.

The theme given for this competition was modernism and my concept of Emirates was magical experience that they give the travelers. On thinking for many days and the whole month I came up with the concept and to include many aspects in one artwork and still be focused with a simple idea I thought of making the most important thing that would link Emirates , that is the sky. Then I wanted to include the whole universe which was impossible in one artwork, so I used my signature style of painting and put up some sacred shapes!

The painting depicts the sky and magical element of freedom in the universe. There is an unknown happiness and flow of movement in the artwork which is almost magical.

This painting can be hung on any wall and especially for children's bedroom as they love colours and fantasy. A very good motivational painting for high achievers and will go very well in any office or home.

The painting has been done using soothing colours and some darker shades to create the feelings of fantasy.

The Emirates Competition for Future Artist is a wonderful opportunity for artists from all over the world to display their work for free. New artist get global exposure and it sure is a way to get international art reviews.

When I got the email this year I was excited and then began the journey of thoughts, processes and composition. The topics for the competition were unique just like the emirates!

 my first thought , and anybody who is mentioned opulence will say diamonds, gold, jewel , pearls , money!

I have linked opulence to spirituality and for me opulence is when a person has all the material possessions in the world but is sophisticated and his needs have become less. To come out of this rat race of money and live a life where you can do away with many things!

The painting opulence has been done on oil sketch paper and is a spiritual abstract painting.

I have specifically used French ultramarine blue, my favourite colour, for indicating royalty and richness. The colour red is symbolic of prosperity and fame, where as the colour green indicates growth and brown used for grounding energy of the individual.

The use of colour gold is very important and I have used it very sparingly to make an important point in this painting. With the progress of painting over the years my lines are disappearing and taking shape into square. Though they are still seen in my works as I cannot do without lines, they are so simple and yet make a dramatic statement in any artwork!

Placement Tips- This is a very good painting and also a feng shui cure for many problems. Since the colours are fresh and bright and having red and green the south and south eats is the best place to hang this painting. This painting named as happy landscape is a fantasy artwork. Love and happiness in this painting can be felt by the viewer since I have used lots of pink colour in this landscape painting. Usually  I am not a landscape person and I usually paint symbolic abstract artworks. The thought to make a fantasy world , using children's colours, though the artwork does look a bit childish but I really enjoyed making this painting. The happy home with colourful walls, the smooth steps of the home and the water moving happily , all depict the immense happiness in this landscape painting.

I still love this painting and even now when I take a look at this artwork it transfers you to the same place of fantasy land.

Since there are no straight lines or hard strokes the painting seems to be flowing in an surreal atmosphere.Very good to hang in children's bedroom especially for the girl's bedroom and I am sure they will enjoy the lovely colours of this symbolic artwork. Also this is a painting done on paper and is small in size so very convenient for the children's bedroom.

Description: This is an landscape painting. Like every artist I too had my share of landscapes though a very few, and I moved on to making abstracts and symbolic artworks. The serene mountains and the calm water project peaceful feelings and the viewer is  drawn towards the present moment.Had a lot of reference photos for this artwork but was not moved by any. The feeling which any landscape gave me was incomplete. Then the idea of an oasis emerged, a place of serenity, a place which doe snot exist in reality! Since my aim of painting was to make happy paintings and leave the world a better place than I had found it , I progressed with this artwork without any reference. There are layers of paints and this photograph is not very clear. It in fact indicates that as my painting has emerged so has the landscape in this artwork.

Placement Suggestions: Basically this is an landscape work and can be hung on any wall as the theme is positive. This painting would be best for the east section of the living room or bedroom. The high rise mountains give strength for the weak hearted people and also soothe the nerves of people suffering from lot of stress. This painting would be suitable for the North East for people suffering from  anxiety and emotional problems, this will help healing and acceptance of one's self.

Description: This work is symbolic and abstract. Done using water colours the painting draws the viewer deep into meditation. It gives a serene feeling along with gradual emergence of faith.This artwork has come up by trying the techniques in watercolours. I used fully loaded brush and made many paintings using the same  strokes.The process was such enjoyable that paintings went on turning one after the other, and I had many artworks using water colours.Finally I stopped after getting tired and then again continued the same another day! This is one of the best among the many artworks. The year 2000 when I started painting and the next has gone by doing artworks using various techniques and styles of paintings, along with different mediums.I am very happy that I have developed my distinct artist's style over the span of more than  a decade. This painting of emergence of faith has a special place in my heart and also had displayed this in my home.

Placement Suggestions: This painting can be hung on any wall. As the dominant colour is green with a dull red on white background no specific details for placement have to be observed. The painting being a healing painting, will draw the viewer into a meditative mode and whenever I still observe it it sends positive vibes and definitely is a beautiful artwork since it has been done using strong positive strokes.Placing this painting on the living room wall or the bedroom wall would be good.

This artwork is , in itself is a whole lot, and a single artwork is sufficient to draw interest in the room.

Description: This painting has the theme of music. The healer who is playing music for the betterment of the world. The long hair especially indicates the long journey of the healing artist. The spiritual tree under which the healer sits is blooming with happiness and showering love. The white veil shows many music instruments as a cover for encompassing all problems. A small colourful boat indicates the pleasant journey of the artist.

Since this is one of my very early artworks the composition and design has not been paid much attention on. The painting has been done in positive and happy mood and this also show the positive spirit. I apologize for the poor quality of this photograph, I am a very bad photographer , but still over the decade have improved quite a lot!

Placement Suggestions: Since this painting has music it can be placed on any wall. The colour red and black would be appropriate for hanging the work on the south wall. It promotes good luck, prosperity, peace and serenity. Due to the positive concept it will send positive vibes on which ever wall it is placed on.

Description: This is one of my earliest paintings. Very simple thought is projected here with many doors, fancy doors, creative doors, colorful doors. This is symbolic representation of opening of many different opportunities in an individual's life. Some are partially open, some slightly moved and the best door is totally and fully open. My life's journey also did get the right direction after this artwork and I am very possessive about his artwork.

I have been attracted to different materials with which doors are made and looking at interior decoration magazines would always find wood, metal and glass doors attractive. Having the white light emerging from behind the doors and the big open door indicates positive energy and also represents life as their are many opportunities for every individual and it is just a matter of choice and hard work to excel in any.

Placement Tips: well I did place it at the back of my front door , for drying. LOL just about any wall in your home. Best if you are in a business where you need other people and many outlets for expanding business, hanging this artwork on the south wall or north wall will help you get good business prospects and opportunities.  Birds are an important part of nature and every artist is some time or other influenced by the colours seen in birds. From the colourful magnificent peacock to the bright green parrots , the grey pigeons, to the brown mynas and the colourful budgies to the black crows! all form a truly wonderful colourful treat to our eyes. Visualizations are so different at times from the actual birds images and hence abstracts are more loved due to their interesting interpretations. Here sharing very old photos of my artworks abstract birds.

 Bird watching is a great hobby and as we observe the minute details in the feathers of different birds the artist inside does come out in form of an artwork. My early years of trials when I began painting and was not so near nature, I had done few abstract paintings on paper. The trekking and walking nature trail trips were my respite to observe birds. I have more bird friends from my terrace garden and my budgies love birds, my parrots that come in the open terrace and birds have been a blessing to me and my art. The ones above have been done in year 2000 and 2001 when I had not even thought that these birds would become such and important part of my life later on.

 This friendly parakeet has come to us in the year 2010 and started staying with us , first outside our window and then later on has become an important part of our family. She lives free and flies for the day coming for feeds from time to time and as the sun sets she comes for sleeping at our place. With our terrace garden birds like mynas, pigeons, crows, sparrows. black sparrow are frequent visitors for feeding, drinking and bathing.

I think the saying,.. 'If you love something the whole universe sets upon itself to get it for you' is very much true.

Online buying has become very easy nowadays and with a click right from the interiors of your home you can purchase any painting that you like. Any artwork can be shipped to you without any hassles as any other thing that you purchase online. Shopping for paintings for your home or office is as easy as ordering for a pizza. There are few tips that will guide you for purchasing paintings online which I would like to mention here for the benefit of the buyers.
1) Any painting looks very good in the picture and you need to go through the details before finalizing any artwork for purchasing. The blue may be pink and the red may be an maroon so kindly clarify.

Meerabai Eternal - Pen Drawings

My first attempt at making a video right from my heart. The pen drawings came up while organizing all my paintings done since the past 12 years. From my line series to my spiritual abstracts and sacred geometry all stacked up neatly arranged into separate folders, The inspiration relates to past years when I was inspired by the true love epic of meerabai and her true spiritual love for God. People  termed her insane when she left her riches and selected the life of a wanderer.

She refused to lead the same life as others from her family following the same rituals and the same superficial life style. Her leaving all the riches and selecting the simple life in way of God, praising him, singing for him..she has made a name in history for true spiritual love and I think this is some what so similar to sufism, that is true love for God. In Hinduism people  sing for the praise of God are termed as Bhajans, Praises are sung by sufi singers which are termed as sufiyanas..which leads me to another inspiration.. sufism is a vast genre of music and this has been on my mind for long, guess after  Buddhism symbols and feng shui paintings maybe this would follow..

Sacred Geometric Abstract Paintings in Water Colour 2003

Sacred geometry or spiritual geometry paintings or symbolic geometric paintings are a very specialized genre of art. Many spiritual healers use geometric shapes to represent balance, harmony and spirituality.Geometry has been an important part of my life as anspiritual healer and artist. healing through the perfect square for balance, the octad for bringing about perfection in any situation and the circle to represent the unending universe , the connection between heaven and earth. The year 2002 abstracts saw many geometric artworks and I continued to paint using water colours on paper. Since I was head strong on making art using the water colour technique making spiritual geometry was an enlightening experience.

I was often labelled as making squares and circles, that which small nursery children make and learn, being simple, thinking simple , drawing simple, yet I was fascinated with the shapes and their form. The circle with its complete wholeness was a shape  on which I have done plenty of paintings. It is sufficient for my whole life even if I go on and on painting the shapes will never be sufficient.  Though after years of spiritual geometry I have moved some what from these total sacred shapes to symbols that represent spirituality.

Understanding the Artist behind the Healing Art

When you meet an artist how do you feel? it is understood that your buyers will want to connect with you, understand your art and some where when they are able to relate to your art only then will the want to make your art an important part of their life. I know talking about selling is a no no, still in our industry and as I discuss this I am too faced with this dilemma of parting with a part of myself.
Let us consider a few thoughts in this direction from a buyers point of view. How you present yourself is very important and how you present your art is still more important. Does not mean you go on and on chattering about how you did your painting, what you saw, what motivated you and how you proceeded to collect paints and , or you just wait for the viewer to ask?
Making beautiful , colourful art is one thing and thinking about selling your art is totally a different thing. I find it so difficult to talk about my art but when I write the words just keep pouring. Is destiny for an artist set, making a landmark in the history of art, do not feel like selling, as I know the money will not make any thing different in my life. Just give me canvas and paints and leave me in solitude, I choose the quiet as many great creations have taken place in silence.
My art has to reach out, my symbols like my babies need to travel abroad and find good homes, I need to be able to help people through my symbols, this will be my best gift. I would be the happiest mother to see my art displayed in many homes and that which brightens up their homes and brings them happiness and prosperity. Oh, how happy I would be to hear the success stories and the sorted out lives where the symbols have healed the past and present karma of people.
Ego is the one that creates all problems, the soul is always beautiful and peaceful. After getting so many no's from Indian galleries, abroad has given me so much encouragement and I really thank these people who have helped me to put up my art online. The day has to begin and end with thanks giving always.

Oil Painting on Oil Sketch Paper, year 2009. 13.5x19.5 Inches. Symbols used for Cho Ku Rei, reiki symbol 'power switch'or 'put the power here' with enlightenment, double happiness and the purification symbol  Sei Hei Ki or purfication symbol to purify the environment and heal the aura.
Reiki symbols and all my symbols are losing their importance in my life as I am using them less and less for personal use. The cho ku rei and the sei-he-ki symbols still come up during cleansing and purification as well as grounding exercises taught from my teacher , some quiet time with exercise and meditation is necessary to ward off negativity.
My symbols displayed in my home have been of great help in healing my past and my present and I wish the same for the whole world. Sending healing for the mother earth. I wish to make simple, colourful, understandable art and whatever the critiques say I will keep making healing art.
It is appropriate for you to ask how my symbols work, whether they do work at all or how can symbols heal?
 I connect with the whole world as I am an important part of this whole universe and though I may be a speck in this divine design I am an important part without which the divine design would not be complete.

Be it the East or the West all people are familiar with this symbol and its symbolic sanctity is also understood by all. There is a deep meaning in this unique symbol which is never mentioned any where and as my spiritual journey carries forward I have been using this yin tang symbol extensively in my healing and feng shui paintings.
The yin yang Tao symbol has been used to project harmony, a balance of positive and negative; white and black; dark and light; day and night; In fact 'chi' or the basic energy life force in feng shui is also having two constituents, that is heaven and earth. The two symbols unite to make a whole, which look like tad poles attached in opposite direction , together to make a complete whole. Usually the yin yang symbol is seen in black and white with two holes in each shape. The two holes represent that each is incomplete without the other. Basically it can also be said that the two are male and female , extrovert and introvert and there are many attributes in nature that, though being opposite,  are all in harmony.

Opposite forces are required for balance and one cannot exist without the other. The black is yin or dark energy and the white, yang indicates light force. Two are merged in form of circle , where we see that the yin has a bit of yang and the yang has a bit of yin, indicating that both are merged together to form a complete whole. The dark part of yin always has to face downwards and the yin has to create a force that rises upwards. When this is in balance then we see peace, harmony, good health and an enriching environment that leads to a successful life.

Energy is our source of existence and as the energy for sustenance lowers we fall sick and feel tired. We have lower energy levels and also affects our relationships and career. Ki energy is the power source of attracting energy from the universe. As I have studied in Reiki the gruesome years of self training, the sacrifices, the trials and the emotional turmoil , having faced all setbacks we come to an awareness of the working of this universe, our karma. Some luck is attached with us which we cannot change that is our birth luck, the heaven luck, which we can improve and clear off bad karma by some healing techniques,  and the other earth luck is where there is a wide open opportunity to grow as much as you put effort.
