Five Simple Tips to Overcome Artist's Block.

All artists during sometime or the other in their career face what is termed as an 'Artist's Block'. What is an Artist's Block? it is the feeling when however much you sit to make a painting you are not able to do it.Either the motivation level is low or the environment is very busy and other demands for the mind are more hence the artist is unable to focus on work and thus faced with a mental block. You sit for hours and think with the colours spread out and many images for ideas and a blank canvas but you don't get any ideas.
Tip one RELAX you are not out to win a race. It happens with all artists and after keeping away the materials for some time this relaxation helps. Tip two GET NEW EXPERIENCES go out to a garden, visit family, or just take a pleasant drive towards the seaside. I am sure your mind will be refreshed. Tip three SEARCH FOR NEW IDEAS shuffle and shuttle in your drawers, old magazines, pictures and greetings for inspiration. Tip Four CONTACT ARTIST FRIENDS yes being in company of like minded individuals helps to get new ideas and looking at their art and discussing about their works opens up your mind. Tip five JUST GET UP AND GET GOING well take the brush and attack the canvas!

The Eye, razarts

This year had been the longest period of artists block in my whole career. I have literally shivering hands whenever I took hold of the brush. The blank canvas was removed , prepared all materials and arranged and many times went back to its place empty. And then the simple approach of attacking the canvas did the trick. Just do some abstract and fill the canvas , like this I got an under painting and base for another artwork and this also helped me to loosen up a bit!

Is Judging Art Correct? critiquing artworks career in art profession

I wonder how can people judge art? what is the criteria for selection? what art is good or bad? so many questions...... no answers. Is judging art correct? critiquing art is a very special field in art career. Art critiques observe the artists, view the history ,journey, subjects, mission statement of the artists and write a review or critique their art. For artists this is helpful as they get a fair judgement of how their art is progressing professionally.  I always say think before commenting on anyone's art as they have put in lots of efforts and resources in making the painting. it is very easy for anyone to comment this is so simple, this is not good art or this is childish painting.

Judging art is very difficult as each individual has different opinions about the same works. Whenever you are in an gallery or looking at a friend's artwork please take care and think before judging art. Galleries have many competitions and judges have a hard time in selecting artworks. Mostly the selection is based on universal appeal and bright colours, fresh concepts or new techniques used during painting. But always the emotional aspect of an work takes it places and people go in for purchasing the artwork if they feel an emotional connection with the artwork.
Think before critiquing an artwork as the artist has made these with a lot of efforts and resources. It may be possible that one particular art work may not appeal to you. That does not mean that the artist is out of your list of viewing. Other artworks of the same artist may have some points which demand your attention. Always try to give suggestions rather than complete statements. It would be advisable to comment gracefully so that even you help the artist to learn and also avoid hurting their sentiments. Never make harsh statement and comments or final statements that the art is boring or does not have life. Try to respect the individual who has made the artwork as you cannot make this piece and if you try painting you will understand how difficult it is to paint any painting and also to go on for years doing the same thing.
Art critiquing is a very lucrative field as most artists especially professional want to get their art critiqued by famous art critiques. It is a stamp of approval for the art collectors sometimes and art buyers that an artists has been acclaimed by famous art critiques as making good art. Many artists too start writing reviews for other artists critiquing each others art thus encouraging and bringing new insights to the paintings. As an art critique you will need to learn to observe art carefully, visit art galleries', exhibitions and then put in your personal thoughts about the art you view. Start with known artists to you personally and then move to professional critiquing for famous artworks. You can write reviews on google blogs, on the artists website if they welcome this, on art gallery sites that are selling paintings-they love some feedback and reviews about artists they represent. you can also write a book about art of specific artists thus putting your personal touches and the artists art explanations.
The artists pay critiques for their reviews. Art galleries' too can pay them for writing reviews. You can also review established or emerging artists and critique them for art buyers who wish to put large sums as investing in art of certain artists, this is like a background check for the artists before they start the process of investing and collecting art of certain painters.
It is not easy if you find difficulty to express in words or are not a good speaker. Being social and media savy is also an added asset to the art critique career profession.

My take on art critiques and their judgements over the past many years for my art-
"Get up and get going" is the only way any artist can survive in the art world.. All the comments and the rejections in the beginning may demoralize anyone and the new artist needs to be strong and persistent in their works. "My art is my own ..I am responsible for my work and I love my paintings. I admire them ...I feed my soul by viewing them. Art is an self expression of who you are. There are no rules and no limitations. No explanations and descriptions. My art is self explanatory...I believe in leaving the world as a better place. My paintings will remain forever and with that a part of me".
This positive self talk will help you also as it did in my early years of making art.
Remember- the woods would be so silent if there were songs of only the birds that sang well!
