Caring and cleaning oil paintings is very important to conserve and preserve the costly precious artworks for many years. Since original paintings come at a higher price and then as they appreciate in value over the years you need to keep those investments in a good condition for them to bring good returns.  Paintings are the soul of artist . They need as much care as any other part in your life. People buy paintings for decorating as highlight in a room or for symbolic purposes. Many of us are not aware that only purchasing an expensive artwork does not guarantee its long life.

Sharing Seven tips here to care for your oil paintings at home- 
1)Care has to be taken to hang it at a comfortable level to avoid fingering by small children and pets. There is always a tendency to touch original oil paintings by lay people. Hang it in areas where they will not touch art directly, or you risk the paint being scratched. Once scratched the beauty and value of the painting drops.
2)Keep it clean by wiping oil paintings on canvas with a soft muslin cloth. Care has to be taken about the cloth material used for wiping as rough materials can damage the paint or other materials used in the paintings. Always choose clean soft muslin cloth with delicate strokes to clean.
3) Hang it away from the window. Strong breeze and sunlight may fade the colors of your artworks.Avoid direct sunlight places where you hang paintings.
4) Glass frames can be cleaned with wet sponge but take care to have corners,mounts, inside the frame of good quality. Do not use too much watery sponge as it will leave stains on the glass frames. This allows your paintings to breathe and avoids fungus growth on the artworks. 5)Keep paintings away from moisture and damp environment. They may show fungus growth and lead to long term damage to artworks and canvas. Especially if there is leakage near any wall or ceiling the complete wall is damp from inside and artworks hanging on such walls will be affected severely. Nothing will be seen from front , do keep checking the backside of the canvas as that will turn black due to mold growth.
6) It is advisable to ask the artist from whom you have purchased the artwork , especially in case of collages and other media artworks as they need special care for cleaning and handling. The preservation and conservation advice directly form the artist is best, and they will be happy to share. 7) Paintings are an asset and they grow in value over the years so treat your artworks as special and they will reward you.
